One Police Bomb Technician Killed in Explosion at Rivne Police Station
One police bomb-disposal specialist was killed and three other officers injured after an explosion occurred in the courtyard of a police station in Rivne during official duties on August 31. Ukraine’s State Bureau of Investigation has opened a criminal investigation into the incident.
Explosion Occurs During Police Bomb-Disposal Work
The explosion happened at around 3:30 p.m. on August 31 in the courtyard of Police Station No. 1 in Rivne.
According to the Rivne Regional Police, the detonation occurred while members of the police explosives unit were carrying out their official duties.
One specialist from the police explosives unit was killed.
Three other police officers from the same unit were injured in the explosion.
Investigators Are Determining What Caused the Explosion
The State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) has opened a pre-trial investigation under Article 264 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code, which concerns violations of rules governing the handling of explosive, flammable and other dangerous substances or objects.
Investigators are working to establish the circumstances and cause of the detonation.
The police have not yet publicly disclosed what specific explosive item or material detonated.
Emergency Services Worked at the Scene
Emergency and investigative teams were deployed to the police station following the explosion.
