Japan’s State Minister of Justice Arrives in Ukraine for Official Visit

Japan’s State Minister of Justice Hidehiro Mitani has arrived in Ukraine for an official visit, the Japanese Embassy in Ukraine announced on Monday. The trip underscores Tokyo’s continued engagement with Ukraine as the two countries deepen cooperation during Russia’s full-scale invasion.

According to the embassy, Mitani’s visit to Kyiv includes a ceremony at the Wall of Remembrance near St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery, where he is expected to lay flowers in honor of Ukrainian service members who have been killed defending the country.

A Symbolic Visit Amid Strong Bilateral Ties

The visit comes as Japan continues to expand political, humanitarian, and reconstruction support for Ukraine. In recent months, senior Japanese officials have held a series of high-level meetings with Ukrainian counterparts, reaffirming Tokyo’s commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty, post-war recovery, and long-term development.

Although the embassy did not immediately release the minister’s full agenda, visits by senior Japanese officials to Kyiv have frequently included meetings with Ukrainian government representatives and discussions on bilateral cooperation in areas such as justice, reconstruction, and institutional reform.

Japan Remains One of Ukraine’s Key Partners

Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, Japan has emerged as one of Ukraine’s leading partners in Asia, providing financial assistance, humanitarian aid, sanctions against Russia, and support for reconstruction initiatives.

Tokyo has repeatedly stated that it will continue to stand with Ukraine and work alongside its G7 partners to support the country’s recovery while maintaining pressure on Moscow through coordinated sanctions.
