Zhytomyr hosted the regional folk art festival “Masterful June”: How Polissya preserves its traditions
The traditional culture of Polissya came alive once again in a vibrant display of colors, sounds, and unique handmade crafts. On June 20, Zhytomyr hosted the large-scale regional folk art festival “Masterful June.” The event served as a powerful cultural platform, bringing together folk artists, colorful performance ensembles, and numerous admirers of Ukrainian traditions.
The primary goal of the event was to popularize the authentic crafts of the Polissya region, preserve intangible cultural heritage, and support artisans who, despite all modern challenges, continue to create and pass their knowledge down to future generations.
Living history of crafts: What amazed the guests
The festival space was transformed into a bustling town of artisans, where every corner showcased a distinct type of traditional craft. Visitors had the opportunity not only to examine the unique items but also to speak with their creators and learn the secrets of ancient techniques.
The exhibition locations featured:
-
Polissya embroidery and weaving: traditional geometric patterns, authentic clothing, and towels that carry the region’s genetic code.
-
Pottery and ceramics: artisans demonstrated both classic clay tableware and decorative pieces.
-
Wicker weaving and wood carving: practical household items and delicate souvenirs crafted from the natural materials of Polissya.
-
Motanka dolls and traditional toys: protective amulets made according to ancient canons, which drew special interest from the children.
For those eager to try their hand at being an artisan, interactive masterclasses were available. Under the guidance of experienced masters, festival guests learned how to mold clay, weave wicker, and create their own amulets.
The singing soul of the region: Performances by artistic ensembles
A colorful musical program was an integral part of “Masterful June.” Folk and amateur ensembles from various corners of the Zhytomyr region filled the festival with the lively energy of Polissya songs.
Authentic ritual songs, recorded by researchers during expeditions to the most remote villages of the region, as well as modern arrangements of folk pieces, resonated from the stage. Lively traditional dances and genuine Polissya humor created an incredible atmosphere of unity.
Cultural front and the charitable mission
The organizers emphasize that such events hold special significance today. They prove that Ukrainian culture is alive, developing, and serving as a vital element of our national identity.
In addition to its cultural and educational goals, the event carried a charitable mission: a fundraiser was held throughout the festival to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine. It is thanks to the Ukrainian defenders that these artisans have the opportunity to preserve and popularize the traditions of their native land.
The “Masterful June” festival proved once again that Polissya tradition is not a frozen history on museum shelves, but a living, dynamic, and exceptionally beautiful art form that continues to inspire.
